The standard way to play In a Pickle — argue whether things fit inside other things by playing noun cards in ascending size order across four piles. Claim completed stacks to score points and finish with the most sets.
In a Pickle is a lighthearted word and category card game where every card shows a noun — an object, place, or thing. Your job is to play cards in size order: smaller things go underneath, bigger things go on top. When a pile reaches four cards, the competition heats up as everyone races to cap it with something even bigger.
The fun comes from creative arguments about relative size. Does a "basketball" fit inside a "kangaroo pouch"? Can a "submarine" fit inside an "ocean"? You decide — and so does the table. Games play fast (15–30 minutes) with 2–6 players.
Shuffle the deck and deal 5 cards to each player
Place 4 cards face-up in a plus-sign pattern in the center of the table — these are the starting piles
Place the remaining deck face-down as the draw pile
You have two options:
Play one card from your hand onto one of the four piles. You can place it:
On top — your noun must be larger than the current top card (it could contain or encompass the thing above it)
Underneath — your noun must be smaller than the current bottom card (it could fit inside the thing below it)
After playing, draw one card from the draw pile to replenish your hand.
Tip: Size is relative and debatable. "Ant" clearly fits inside "shoe," but does "homework" fit inside "backpack"? If another player challenges your placement, the group votes. Majority rules — if the group says it doesn't fit, take your card back and your turn is over.
If you cannot or choose not to play, you may swap up to 3 cards from your hand with cards from the draw pile. Your turn then ends.
When any pile reaches 4 cards, a Pickle Round begins:
The player who placed the 4th card does not claim the pile yet
Starting with the next player clockwise, each player gets one chance to play a card on top of that pile (it must be bigger than the current top card)
Cards cannot be played underneath during a Pickle Round
No cards can be played on any other pile during the Pickle Round
The player who plays the last card on the pile (after no one else can or wants to top it) claims the entire stack as a scored set
After a set is claimed, replace the empty pile spot with a new card from the draw pile.
The game ends when the draw pile runs out and no more plays can be made (or players agree to stop). Each claimed set counts as 1 point.
The player with the most claimed sets wins. If tied, the tied players share the victory.
In a Pickle is a most-sets-wins game. Each time you claim a completed pile during a Pickle Round, that stack counts as 1 point (1 set). The player with the most sets at the end wins.
Tiebreaker: Tied players share the victory.
