Average Percentile
Every finish becomes the share of the field you beat — first of eight is 100%, third of four is 33% — and those get averaged. Playing more never hurts you.
avg((players_beaten / (N-1)) × 100)
Best at
Mixed field sizes and uneven attendance; the fairest reading in this family, and comparable enough between groups to travel to a global board.
Where it misleads
Ignores opponent strength. Beating a weak field reads exactly like beating a strong one.
How it works
Average Percentile converts each finish to a 0-100 percentile score before averaging. Finishing 1st out of 4 players (100th percentile) and 1st out of 10 players (100th percentile) are treated equally.
How it works: For each match, your percentile = (players_beaten / (total_players - 1)) × 100. Then average all your percentiles. A score of 75 means you typically finish in the top quarter.
When to use it: The fairest average-based method when match sizes vary. It solves the key problem with Average Placement by normalizing for field size.
Watch out for: The percentile calculation is less intuitive than raw placements. Players may need explanation of what their percentile number means.
